SUBJECT: The parents and siblings of Nancy Pawley and the family of Nancy’s sister, Rebecca Pawley Duer.
STARTING POINT:
Before September of 2012, nothing was known about the parents or siblings of Nancy Pawley Watt. That September, a reference was found to the Watt Family Record Book at the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan.[1] This diary was written by Nancy Pawley’s daughter, Gertrude Watt Welker between 1863 and 1885 and contained four pages of hand drawn pedigrees. One of those pedigrees shows that Nancy’s parents were James Pawley and Rebecca McCormick; it also lists Nancy’s three sisters. The fact that there is a second marriage listed for Rebecca McCormick implies that James Pawley died early[J1] . Some of the documentation for Nancy’s family is found in the records for the second marriage and the two known children of that marriage.
James Pawley married Rebecca McCormick, who was born 28 March 1783 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, and they were the parents of four known children.[2]
i. Mary Ann Pawley, married a Brisbine.
ii. Martha Pawley, married Benjamin Pitney Baldwin, Sr in July of 1821[3]
iii. Nancy Pawley, born 19 August 1804, married Thomas Watt about 1822[4]
iv. Rebecca Pawley, married a Duev.
James Pawley appears on the tax lists in Coitsville, Trumbull, Ohio in 1803 and 1804.[5]According to notes in The Henry R. Baldwin Genealogical Records, in 1811 the widow of James Pawley is listed as a “resident proprietor” in Coitsville.[6] This indicates that James Pawley died before the 1811 tax list was created.
Rebecca [McCormick] Pawley and Erastus Cowdery applied for a marriage license in Coitsville, Trumbull, Ohio on 26 August 1819; Thomas Pawley was listed as the applicant.[7] Erastus Cowdery and Rebecca [McCormick] Pawley had two known children:
i. Sarah Jane Cowdery, who married Calvin Applegate[8]
ii. Lucinda Cowdery, who married a Russell
NOTE: Ohio became a territory in 1799 and a state in 1803. Trumbull County was formed in 1800 from Jefferson County, Ohio and Wayne County, Michigan. The 1800 and 1810 United States Federal Censuses were lost for the relevant counties in Ohio.
